HISTORY
U-Sector was founded in 2000 as an independent supporters group for the Toronto Lynx.
Originally known as the Toronto Ultras, the U-Sector got its name because the group was always in Section ‘U’ at the old Varsity Stadium during matches. After Varsity was demolished, the Lynx set up shop in less impressive pastures at Centennial Park Stadium in suburban Etobicoke. The Toronto Ultras followed, and the nickname based on the original home of the group would stick as a secondary name.
In the 2004 off-season, mostly due to the widespread use of the name ‘Ultras’ in the world of football – and also partially because of some of the stigma which came with the Ultras tag – the group adopted U-Sector as its primary moniker. It is implied, however, that the ‘U’ stands for both the Varsity Stadium section where the group once stood in unison as well as the original Ultras name.
Since the founding of Toronto FC in 2006, the group has expanded its primary support to the MLS side, although it still occasionally holds Lynx-related events, and additionally supports the Canadian national teams. U-Sector members are mostly located in BMO Field’s section 113, although there are many more dispersed throughout the entire stadium.
HOW TO JOIN
U-Sector takes pride in being a loosely-affiliated-yet-tight-knit organization of like-minded individuals who want to contribute to the ever-growing Toronto supporters culture.
As such, there is no official membership process, but rather one is generally “accepted into” the group through building up a relationship with one’s fellow U-Sector members.
To join U-Sector, simply join the discussions on the message boards and become active in the group community, stand and sing with us, help us create banners and flags, travel to away matches, and join in our post-game festivities.
