Whomever first uttered the old cliché “you win some, and you lose some” clearly wasn’t a soccer fan.
Toronto FC proved that last night when they advanced to the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League by way of the biggest draw in team history. Up 1-0 on aggregate heading into the match, TFC knew that a draw with C.D. Motagua of Tegucigalpa would be enough to allow the Reds to move on. Even a loss would do the trick, provided that Toronto managed to score a goal along the way and keep within one of their Honduran hosts.

When all is said and done, Tuesday night will likely be among the toughest in Toronto FC’s season.
The Reds travel to Tegucigalpa, Honduras to take on host C.D. Motagua in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League preliminary round. TFC heads to the Honduran capital with a 1-0 advantage in the two-legged, total-goal series, and looks to endure 90 minutes at Estadio Nacional with at least the same goal differential intact.

Ok, so that was entirely predictable.
Anyone who has followed TFC for a substantial amount of time would not have been surprised by last night’s away loss to lowly Kansas City Wizards, in a match that featured two teams that didn’t really look too interested.
That KC pulled off the 1-0 win — thanks to Teal Bunbury opportunistically pouncing on an uncharacteristic mistake from Toronto’s central defence — speaks more to TFC’s horrendous road form than it does to the Wizards’ play during the 90 minutes.

Is there any opponent that embodies the dregs of the MLS mid-season more than the Kansas City Wizards?
No disrespect to the great states of Missouri or Kansas, nor any to either Kansas City, but the Wizards are the definition of ‘meh’: A non-descript, unglamourous team in the middle of the continental United States, far removed from any other team in the league, without any real stars, sporting a terrible record and playing in a minor league baseball park.

There are wins, there are resounding wins, and then there are wins that should be resounding but aren’t. TFC’s 1-0 victory over Club Deportivo Motagua of Honduras falls squarely in the latter category.
The Reds were all over their opponents in yesterday’s preliminary round CONCACAF Champions League match, a stark contrast to the lackluster play that has plagued the team of late. Yet even though they were decidedly more inspired than in other recent games, Toronto once again lacked in the goal-scoring department, a lone Chad Barrett marker early in the match being the difference between the two teams.

Another two points dropped at home.
Toronto FC allowed FC Dallas to snatch a late draw on Saturday night, in a match that was all-too-reminiscent of those soul-shattering performances of 2009.

That was fun.
The friendly last night between Toronto FC and England’s Bolton Wanderers was a light-hearted little distraction from the grind that is TFC’s season. And the fact that exactly zero of TFC’s regulars featured in the match, played just three days ahead of a crucial game against FC Dallas, made it that much more enjoyable.

It’s better if we just pretend that that game on the weekend never happened.
TFC, away to expansion Philadelphia Union in the less-than-impressive environs of Chester, Pennsylvania (although PPL Park is a true gem of a stadium), did their part in making the newbies feel as if they may actually still have a shot at success in this MLS season.
They don’t, of course, but the Reds did their best to play the part of gracious guests.

Dwayne De Rosario was named today to the MLS All-Star Team’s First XI.
The All-Stars will take on Manchester United at Houston’s Reliant Stadium on July 28th. Toronto FC has a home CONCACAF Champions League qualifying match versus Honduran side Motagua July 27th. De Rosario will be playing in both. Does anyone not see anything wrong with this scenario?

Starting Saturday in suburban Philadelphia, Toronto FC will embark on a stretch of eight games in 25 days, a brutal series of matches that could very well define their season.
Between the league, CONCACAF Champions League qualifying matches, and a seriously ill-timed friendly, TFC will test every last bit of its newly reinforced roster. And all of this during one of the hottest summers on record.
First up is a trip to expansion Philadelphia Union. A quick glance at the standings would indicate that this should be as close to a guaranteed road victory as TFC has ever come across, but of course it’s not as simple as that. The Union have been unfortunate not to have picked up more points in recent games, as their play in the past few matches has been more in line with that of a middling MLS side rather than a dreadful expansion outfit.
